Did you know that Martin Luther King lost his life rallying for better wages for sanitation workers in Memphis? Did you know that following King's death, the workers continued to strike, and eventually won?
Over half a century since we lost Dr. King, we continue to learn from his legacy. While Dr. King's civil rights accomplishments are rightly celebrated, his advocacy on behalf of American workers is equally inspiring. In light of historic income inequality, Americans should embrace Dr. King's message of working class prosperity.

Then as now, Americans need to stand up and organize for the values they hold dearest. The American people want to protect Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, and they know that tax breaks for millionaires mean less money for working people. As we celebrate Martin Luther King's birthday, let us remember his words: "What good is having the right to sit at a lunch counter if you can't afford to buy a hamburger?"
