Message from Congressman Keith Ellison

Dear Friend,

Did you know that Martin Luther King lost his life rallying for better wages for sanitation workers in Memphis? Did you know that following King's death, the workers continued to strike, and eventually won?

Over half a century since we lost Dr. King, we continue to learn from his legacy. While Dr. King's civil rights accomplishments are rightly celebrated, his advocacy on behalf of American workers is equally inspiring. In light of historic income inequality, Americans should embrace Dr. King's message of working class prosperity.

Please take the time to watch a brief video message I recorded on King's message below.

Then as now, Americans need to stand up and organize for the values they hold dearest. The American people want to protect Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, and they know that tax breaks for millionaires mean less money for working people. As we celebrate Martin Luther King's birthday, let us remember his words: "What good is having the right to sit at a lunch counter if you can't afford to buy a hamburger?"

Klobuchar sworn in to second term in the U.S. Senate

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar today was sworn in to the 113th Congress. This is her second term in the U.S. Senate. Klobuchar was joined at the Capitol by Vice President Walter Mondale, her family, and many Minnesotans.

"I have always approached my job with one simple value: putting the people of Minnesota first," said Klobuchar. "To solve our nation's toughest challenges we must stand together and renew our commitment to our country and our faith in America by renewing our economy, our democracy and our Congress, and I will continue to work to find common ground and commonsense solutions to move this country forward."

"Amy approaches every challenge—no matter how large or small—with a clear vision, a consistent voice, and the courage to reach across the aisle and get the job done," Vice President Walter Mondale said. "She is a worker and she is a fighter and that is exactly the kind of senator that Minnesotans deserve."

Klobuchar serves on the Senate Agriculture Committee, the Judiciary Committee, the Commerce Committee and the Joint Economic Committee. She also chairs the Senate Subcommittee on Competitiveness, Innovation, and Export Promotion, which works to advance a competitive agenda to move America forward. Klobuchar was the first woman elected to the Senate from Minnesota and formerly served as Hennepin County Attorney.

Ellison: We Need to Pass Hubert Humphrey's Moral Test

At a press conference with faith leaders today, Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) invoked Minnesota Senator and Vice President Hubert Humphrey today, who said, "The moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; and those who are in the shadows of life, the sick, the needy and the handicapped."
