Technology training a way to stimulate our economyCan you imagine not knowing how to turn on a computer? For many low-income individuals throughout the Twin Cities metro area this is a harsh reality. In today's technology infiltrated world there is an increasing divide between those who have access to and are able to use computers and those who are not. This separation leads to a multitude of inequalities and creates a sizeable disadvantage in the job market. The University of Minnesota's Broadband Access Project (BAP) aims to close this gap through the development and enhancement of 12 public computer centers in four federally designated poverty zones in Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Small computer center making large impact

Small computer center making large impact"It is my first time to touch computer and I am very happy."

These were the words exclaimed by Zulfa Fara, an Ethiopian immigrant who was at a computer center developed through the Broadband Access Project (BAP), an outreach project of the University of Minnesota's Urban Research and Outreach/Engagement Center (UROC). In response to the growing digital divide among underserved communities in the Twin Cities, UROC developed a project that aims to increase broadband access, awareness and use in four federally designated poverty zones in Minneapolis and St. Paul. The project is funded through a federal grant from the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program.

It is undeniable the Internet has become a key player in Americans' everyday lives. From keeping up to date on current news and connecting with loved ones to finding employment sources and promoting business it permeates most aspects of life. Despite this penetration, many Americans are still without access to broadband, or high-speed Internet access. Expand access, reduce digital divide

Recently I was invited to speak at the graduation ceremony for the very first Asian Media Technology Training. That night the Asian community was overflowing with gratitude as supportive families of the graduates filled the audience of over 100 people. The 15 graduating students were honored and proud to be the first group to take part in this media training provided by the Asian Community Technology Center, with assistance from the University of Minnesota’s Broadband Access Project.
