It is Wednesday, January 6th 2010, and it is a cold day in Downtown Minneapolis. The cars and trucks parked on the street are covered with snow, and the roads are icy; the feeling of “old man winter” is definitely present. At Earl Bowman Hall on the campus of Minneapolis Community and Technical College, there is a different feeling among students, faculty, staff and fans alike. They are hot, energetic, and filled with excitement. The hometown teams, the Mavericks, are getting ready to play longtime rivals, Spartans, from Fergus Falls Minnesota.

Shani Davis: Black History

African American Shani Davis currently holds the World Records for Speed Skating’s 1000m and 1500m distances. Davis was the first Black athlete to win an individual event Gold Medal at the Winter Olympics. Davis accomplished that feat in the 2006 Olympics, in Turin, Italy, and he actually claimed both the 1500m silver Medals. In his career thus far, Davis has set eight World Records. All of these accomplishments and many, many, more, make Davis an integral figure in African American History.

The Starkey Hearing Foundation annually delivers more than 50,000 hearing aids through The Super Hear Mission in the United States and around the World. While the Super Bowl parties were going down in Miami, Vikings players contributed their time to this unique and special cause.

Edison coach selected for Breaking Barriers

In celebration of the 24th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day on February 3, the Minnesota Coalition of Women in Athletic Leadership presented the Breaking Barriers Award to Charlita Williamson, Edison High School Community Resource Liaison and athletic coach, at the Minnesota State Capitol.
