Millions of ex-offenders given a voting ‘Death Sentence’

WASHINGTON (NNPA) – Nearly 6 million former prisoners –1 million of them Black – will not be able to vote in the November presidential election because of state laws that continue to punish them even after they have completed their sentences, according to a recent report by the Sentencing Project.

Mitt Romney's effort to win the support of the NAACP is an important strategy and speech that should not go unnoticed.

Amid all the reports and punditry that Gov. Romney received a hostile reception at the civil rights group's Houston conference, the standing ovation he received at the end of his speech has been largely overlooked by mainstream media. Since the Republicans' presumptive nominee made his appearance and speech to the NAACP, most likely you've heard that Romney was booed. But, what you may not have heard is that Romney left the stage to a standing ovation.

Minnesota online polling location finder updated to reflect redistricting

Secretary of State Mark Ritchie encourages Minnesota voters to use the Office of the Secretary of State's free online service to locate their polling location for the August 14 state primary election. Voters can find their voting location, a map to that location, information about their voting district, and candidates appearing on their ballot simply by entering their address into Polling Place Finder application at www.mnvotes.org.

VOTER ID How could the proposed amendment impact the election process in rural areas?

There are more questions than answers for local governments when it comes to implementation and associated costs of administering elections should the amendment pass in November.

This November, Minnesota residents will be asked to decide whether voters should be required to present valid, government-issued photographic proof of identity prior to casting a ballot. While it is not the job of local election officials to determine whether this concept is valid, it is the responsibility of all local units of government, ranging from the smallest township to the largest county, to be properly prepared to administer elections in compliance with all applicable laws.

County Commissioner District 2: Hennepin County has failed to address poverty, candidates say

Poverty was the topic for a recent forum held at the Urban League of Minneapolis.

The forum served as a screening for Hennepin County Dist. 2 County Commissioner candidates. Participating candidates were Leslie Davis, Rolf Erickson, Linda Higgins, Tonia Johnson Kathleen Murdock, Paula Pentel and Roger Smithrud. Many of the candidates linked poverty to unemployment and lack of education.

Rwanda slapped with sanctions for backing mutineers

(GIN) – U.S. military aid has been suspended to Rwanda after convincing evidence that it is supporting a mutiny in the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo.

A State Dept. spokesman said that troubling evidence had been seen that Congolese rebel groups were receiving aid and soldiers from the Rwandese government of Paul Kagame.
