I am passionate about developing the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health of children. I have dedicated 20 years of my life to working with children in various capacities, whether it be dance, mentoring, or life skills training. Over this time, I have witnessed first hand children who are becoming less and less healthy.

In June, Rice University's James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy released "The Economic Impact of Uninsured Children on America," (.pdf) a new report whose bottom line is that extending health insurance coverage to all children in the United States would be relatively inexpensive compared to the cost of letting children remain uninsured and would yield economic benefits that are greater than the costs.

U of M Medical School receives grant from National Institutes of Health to establish Center of Excellence in Minority Health

The University of Minnesota Medical School was awarded $6.24 million by the National Institutes of Health to establish a Center for Excellence in Health Disparities Research, Engagement, and Training (CeHDRET) focusing on minority health and health disparities. More then 30 percent of Minneapolis is composed of ethnic minorities, and this grant will help provide the Medical School with the resources to enhance opportunities for diverse populations and improve minority health overall.

More choices now available under Minnesota WIC Nutrition Program

Foods provided under the federal Women, Infants and Children Nutrition program (WIC) now include fruits and vegetables. The changes are the first major overhaul of the foods available through WIC. The 35-year-old federally-funded nutrition program serves lower-income and nutritionally-at-risk pregnant and breast-feeding women, their infants and young children.
