KIPP students jump start the school year in the summer

While most kids are still relaxing at the pool, students at KIPP Stand Academy are already headed back to school. The charter school opens its doors today for its second year, welcoming a new class of fifth graders and its returning class of sixth graders. The mandatory summer session, which goes until September 4, gives KIPP Stand students a head start on the school year and preparing for college.

City creates a parking program to mitigate the loss of parking in the Central Corridor

Bridges to Safety serves nearly 1,000 domestic abuse victims in first year

Bridges to Safety, the domestic abuse service center housed in City Hall/Ramsey County Courthouse, recently celebrated its first year of operation. A long time in the planning, the center finally came to life in 2008, representing the work and leadership of a coalition of 19 different agencies, including Mayor Chris Coleman’s office.

Tobacco-Free Youth – Start Noticing group performs at Health Fair and Hoops FestBrooklyn Center, MN - The TFY - Start Noticing youth performance was featured at the 5th Annual Health Fair and Hoops Fest, hosted by the Center of Hope and Compassion.  Youth began the performance by announcing the launch of the Start Noticing coalition in Minnesota, an effort focused on getting people to start noticing tobacco advertisements in the community and their effect on youth tobacco use. Performers talked to the audience about the issue of in-store tobacco advertising, and specifically their plan to reduce tobacco ads at children’s eye-level (3 feet and below).
