Latino Midwest News wins national awardThe National Association of Hispanic Publications presented the Jose Marti Publishing Gold Award to Latino Midwest News, Saint Paul, Minnesota, for “Outstanding Front Page Design” during the recent 25th Annual 2010 (NAHP) Convention in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Latino Midwest News submitted the 2009 Christmas Cover Page to participate in the contest under the category of Outstanding Front Page Design and circulation of under 30.000 copies.

Lowertown Reading Jam: An evening of poetry and activism by award-winning artists and poetsThe Saint Paul Almanac continues its year-round literary celebration of the capital city with inspiring spoken word performances, followed by a thought-provoking discussion about “Poetry and Activism.” The April Lowertown Reading Jam, April 5, 2010, curated by internationally acclaimed artist, Desdamona, will also feature performances by Reggie Harris, Tish Jones and Ibé. The poets will perform their poetry and talk about the work they do in schools, prisons and other communities, and invite the audience to share a dialog with them on their work. The Reading Jam runs from 7 to 8:30 pm at the Black Dog Café, 308 Prince Street in Saint Paul.

Minneapolis approves $15.4-Million Foreclosure Plan with Economic-Recovery Funds Funding will continue housing-recovery efforts

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak today approved a spending plan passed by the City Council last Friday to use $15,424,156 in federal Neighborhood Stabilization funds to continue work underway to stabilize and rebuild communities heavily affected by mortgage foreclosures. The funds come from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Winter parking restrictions end in Minneapolis: Drivers should continue to follow posted parking signs

Effective immediately, Minneapolis has lifted the Winter Parking Restrictions that were put in place last month. The restrictions went into effect on Feb. 11 after snow accumulations narrowed many streets, making it difficult for fire trucks, ambulances, and other emergency vehicles to navigate in some neighborhoods. Limiting parking to one side of many city streets created more reliable access for emergency responses.

Free tax preparation at Sabathani Community Center

Sabathani Community Center will be preparing free tax returns every Saturday through the end of the tax season for people with low to moderate incomes.  Generally, service is available to families with an annual income of $45,000 or less and individuals with $30,000 or less.  This is a walk in service .
