Juvenile crime continues to decline

The Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI) has reported a 10% reduction in the average daily population of the county’s Juvenile Detention Center (JDC) from 2009 through the 3rd quarter of 2010 by using community-based programs as an alternative to JDC.

The JDAI is a collaborative effort of the courts, probation, police, county attorneys, public defenders, schools, human services, and community members to create an effective, fair, and efficient juvenile justice system that produces positive outcomes for youth, while at the same time protecting public safety.

Hallie Q. Brown Community Center to honor Judge Stephen Maxwell

Hallie Q. Brown Community Center unveiled two portraits of the late Judge Stephen Maxwell, the first African American district judge in Minnesota at its Annual Gala event on January 15.

“It was amazing as a fellow Morehouse Man to be able to honor him on Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday in the Martin Luther King Center, himself also a Morehouse Man. Dr. King and Judge Maxwell exemplify what I and what anyone who seeks to do good things for this world should and do strive for. They were men of honor and integrity who stood as examples for us to follow”, said Jonathan Palmer, Executive Director of the Hallie Q. Brown Community Center.

Hennepin County Senior Volunteers Honored

Foster Grandparents and Senior Companions in the community were honored at special luncheons in the Twin Cities last month for their voluntary services to children and the elderly.

Foster Grandparents Program, along with its sister program Senior Companions, is part of the National Corporation for National and Community Service, which in Minnesota are sponsored by Lutheran Social Service.

Foster Grandparents, aged over 55, provide tutoring and one-to-one mentoring to children in schools, Head Start programs and shelters.

Merrick Community Services names new executive director

Merrick Community Services names new executive directorMerrick Community Services (MCS) has named Daniel A. Rodriguez as its new executive director. Rodriguez succeeds Francis Ivory, who is retiring after serving MCS for 15 years.

Rodriguez joined MCS on January 10th, and will lead MCS into its next chapter as the organization works to provide social services to people living in St. Paul’s increasingly diverse East Side. “I’m very excited to be associated with an organization that is so aligned with my values and principles,” said Rodriguez. “The more I learn about the organization and meet people, who have a connection to it, the more impressed I become.”

Park Board Officers, Committees, Representatives for 2011The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board at their annual meeting on Monday, Jan. 3, elected officers for 2011—John Erwin as President, Annie Young as Vice President, Karen Robinson as Secretary to the Board, and Brian Rice as General Counsel.

President Erwin appointed the Commissioners to serve on Standing Committees of the Board (one-year terms). Park Board commissioners and three citizens were also appointed to serve on the external boards, commissions and panels.
