Shangilia Youth Choir of Kenya with J.D. Steele June 5-6, 2010Shangilia is a youth performance group from Nairobi, Kenya, under the direction of singer/director/composer J.D. Steele. Ranging in age from 10 to 21, the performers sing in English and Swahili with original music composed by Steele and Butch Heyward that blends African-American soul and gospel with East African rhythms like soukous and bongo. Shangilia also incorporates traditional African music and dance with acrobatics and colorful costumes, weaving messages of love, peace and harmony into this exciting musical presentation.

Shangilia will be joined onstage by the newly-formed MacPhail Community Youth Choir (MCYC), also under the direction of J.D. Steele. MCYC is a choir comprised of youth from around the Twin Cities Metro to meet and exchange musical traditions during the Shangilia Youth Choir's visit to the Twin Cities area. MCYC will also perform on the outdoor stages through the weekend. shangilia.org

Robin Hickman, CEO and Executive Producer at SoulTouch Productions, a participant in the 1981 Cotillion valued the mentorship and nurturing provided by her elementary School Principal, Shirley Kaiser, who is a member of the Links.  “It was so important to me to be warmly embraced and to bond and interact with the women in my group. I received a Links scholarship and I reflect fondly on how the experience helped me prepare college at  Howard University in Washington D. C. Hickman is giving back 30 years later by conducting this year’s Leadership Workshop for the 2010 participants and escorts.

Dumelang! ( I greet you) My name is Carol McCullar and I hail from South Africa. I have been living here in Minneapolis for the past 18 months. One thinks that the movies are sufficient to teach you all about the American way of life! Nothing can prepare you for what awaits you once you have undressed at the port of entry, had your blood drawn, finger prints taken, grandmother’s first boyfriend’s name and address noted and all the rest done.  You walk through the little opening –at customs praying that you don’t trigger any alarms because of the 12 stones you took from your mother’s grave, securely pinned with a safety pin in your luggage.  Once through- you smile! “I am an American!” you think to yourself!

Intermedia Arts Bar B Que Fest launches summer program

Intermedia Arts, 2822 Lyndale Av. S., Minneapolis, a Twin Cities based multidisciplinary, multicultural arts organization will launch its summer program season 4-7pm June 19th, with a Bar B Que Fest community celebration that features art making and a DJ dance party.

The event will showcase Intermedia Arts’ new community spaces including the newest art-on-our-walls project, and introduce new staff members. Hands on activities for families include button-making and screen-printing, as well as the interactive gallery installation exhibit, the Storefront of Ideas.

Forum on supporting juveniles

A Community forum on supporting youth through juvenile justice reform and violence prevention takes place 6:30 pm-8:30 pm., May 20, 2010 at Colin Powell Youth Leadership Center, 2924 Fourth Ave. S., Minneapolis. The forum will cover Minneapolis’s Blueprint for Violence Prevention and the work of Juvenile justice reform/ Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI).

The open forum explores how can the community and government agencies better support youth?

1,200 volunteers serve 30 area nonprofits on Comcast Cares Day

1,200 volunteers serve 30 area nonprofits on Comcast Cares Day On April 24, a volunteer crew from Comcast painted and cleaned at the Minneapolis Urban League’s Sharon Sayles Belton Community Center at 411 E. 38th St. in Minneapolis. The community center was one of more than two dozen work sites for “Comcast Cares Day.”

“We’re glad to help,” said Comcast’s project coordinator Robert Langle. “This building was damaged by last summer’s tornado and it gets lots of community use.”

Comcast has strong ties to the Minneapolis Urban League (MUL) throughout the year. Diana Hawkins, government affairs specialist for Comcast, serves on the MUL board and was at the community center for Saturday’s work session. This is the third year that a volunteer crew has worked at an MUL site for “Comcast Cares Day.”
