Pants on fire? Don’t get burned

Pants on fire? Don’t get burnedRecruiters often need to hire people with specific, technical knowledge.  When I mention a skill to someone and he says, “I can do that,” I feel encouraged.  When she tells me where she learned that software or technique and how she applied that knowledge, I get jazzed.  When he tells me more about the skill or requirement than I know myself, I send him in for an interview.

Career RoundAbout: Detour? Or Excellent Shortcut?

Career RoundAbout: Detour? Or Excellent Shortcut? When Rachel asked me to help her husband find a job, I said no.  You who know me know, I rarely say no.  Especially to a challenge.  But I told her, Pops (not his name, but what we call him) never does what I tell him to do.  Everyone knows someone who won’t be moved.  For example, I can get a CFO to change a budget item, but I can’t get my kid to drink orange juice.  Put Grandma in the kitchen, and my son is quickly half-tanked on Minute-Maid.

Before You Hit Send: A Case for Proofreading Your EmailsBusiness owner Jim shared an email that surprised me and made me think.  We all know people who text and drive and chew gum at the same time.  We are in a hurry these days, and need to accomplish important things.  In a written message, typos are easily forgiven, especially if a line at the end of the message says, “Sent from my phone.”

That said, professionals still have a responsibility to maintain a slightly higher standard.  America is in the middle of a battle between spell check and autocorrect, and if the following email is any indication, America is not winning.

Bridging the achievement gap through education and risk taking

Bridging the achievement gap through education and risk takingWhen the State of Minnesota tests schoolchildren each fall, they break down the results in numerous ways in order to determine who is learning and which schools need to step up their programs.  According to Michelle Deziel, the results consistently show that educational resources are not getting to the kids who need them the most.  And educating children, according to Deziel, is a key to long term success in bridging the achievement gap between cultures and overcoming racism in everyday life.
